How working in a music store catapulted my career

Updated: Apr 16, 2021

Before I ventured out playing live shows and teaching, my humble beginnings were in a music store. This is my story.

I tried my years at typical 9-5 job but just couldn't see myself doing it long term, despite the prospects of steady progression and of course money. Dragging myself to work was horrid so I decided to jump into the music industry, taking my first dive into the unknown.

I started as a guitar technician which taught me a great deal about caring for my instruments, the ins and outs of guitar making and various general skills. This was also the time I decided to completely relearn guitar. I started taking Graded Exams to see where my skillset is in the music world (though grades hardly mean a thing) - I took my education seriously and went into a rabbit hole of endless studying and playing. I was obsessed.

When I got my Grade 8 certification, I decided to go into Private Guitar Lessons to try my hand at teaching. I actually taught Ukulele as my first class! As I took on more students, I gained the confidence to challenge myself and take on more advanced students. Taking on Acoustic, Electric in all kinds of playstyles to expand my musical knowledge. Joining bands and jam nights to dive even deeper into the music world.

Even till this day I'm still obsessed with learning. Constant binge of various Music Teachers on YouTube, learning their teaching styles and culminating them to my own - and passing it on to the next generation of musicians.

Hardships were had but overall it's been an extremely fulfilling experience. And I aim to bring it even higher!
